An Appeal for Phil’s Fund
Photo: John Henley 22 May 2010 Great North West Books, one of Portland’s oldest second-hand bookstores, specialising in rare and antique books, was housed in a fine old church building. The photograph shows what was left last week after a fire of unknown cause began in the basement. Even with an engaged sprinkler system, the blaze was intractable. Phil Wikelund, the owner, is safe, but the building and its contents are a complete loss. Phil’s business had slumped during the recent economic downturn and he could no longer afford the exorbitant insurance required on his historic building, so the loss will not be reimbursed. Phil’s lifetime work as a bookseller is gone. Over 100,000 books are gone. Phil must pay all demolition costs. If you are so moved, please donate any amount, large or small to this contribution account:
In addition, Jill Hinckley, founder of Portland’s Murder by the Book store is organizing a benefit book sale. Information at www.GNWBookSale.com. |
